Oatmeal and Apple Facial Mask

April 24, 2008

This oatmeal and apple facial mask has worked wonders on making my skin feel soft. Today was the third time I tried it, and I am hooked. I can actually feel my skin glowing! The oatmeal really helps hydrate your skin, and it feels so, so refreshing.

This recipe makes two to three masks. Remainder can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge. Also, it is pretty messy, so expect to wipe up the floor after you are done, and wear a shirt that is ok to get spills on!

Tips to Keep your Makeup in Place

If you are like me you dread putting on a full face of makeup to go out at night. Upon visiting the restroom after about an hour at the bar you find your eye shadow has creases, and there are lash marks below your eyes….and that foundation, well it is long gone! These are a few tricks that I use rely on to keep my face from looking like the Wicked Witch of the West. What techniques do you use to keep your face from moving?

Foundation

To keep your liquid foundation looking fresh for longer, rub your face with a small amount of waterproof or sweatproof sunscreen. Let the sunscreen dry, and then put your foundation on. Follow the application of your foundation with powder.

Lips

If you have lines around your lips, use a lip liner to keep the lipstick from bleeding.

Before applying lipstick, make sure to exfoliate your lips with a gentle facial scrub.

To keep lipstick off your teeth stick your finger in your mouth after applying lipstick, pucker your lips, and pull your finger out. Any lipstick that would have later been on your teeth will come off on your finger.

Try to avoid eating oily or greasy foods, this breaks down your lipstick further.

When drinking from a glass, there are two tricks. One is to lick the glass where you are about to drink, so that your lips never touch a dry glass. The second is to fold down your bottom lip , so the inside of your lip touches the glass, rather than where your lipstick is. When eating try not to touch your fork or spoon with your lips. This may take a bit of practice to make look natural, but using your teeth and tongue to get the food will help your lipstick stay longer.

Line lips with a lip liner to keep glosses on longer.

Eyes
If your mascara starts to get clumpy throughout the day, use a toothpick to separate the clumps.

To get your eyeliner to stay on longer apply a light amount of foundation. Line your eyes with a waterproof eyeliner, and then coat with a translucent powder.

After applying eyeliner spray with a fine spritz of hairspray. This helps it stay on longer, but if you are pretty active, it will probably still move around a bit.

Use powder eye shadows it stay put much longer than it’s cream based counterpart.

There are many products out on the market that you put on before you apply eye shadow and liner, and it helps it stay put all throughout the day. Most cosmetic lines have one, f.y…eye! by Benefit and Primer Potion by Urban Decay are two.

How to Look Your Best in the Rain

January 5, 2008

While we don’t get all that much rain here in Southern California, the entire state is in the middle of one of the (potentially) biggest rain storms in months or even years. However, having grown up in Washington state, I know what a real storm looks like, and learned at an early age how to deal with it, and get on with every day life.

When I see rain outside my windows, I want nothing more than a hot cup of coffee, a good book, a nice warm blanket, and hours and hours of free time to spend on the sofa. Unfortunately for most (myself included) the rain doesn’t stop real life, and we have to find a way to get to get around, without catching pneumonia or looking like a drowned cat.

If you have longer hair, twist it around loosely and pull it up with a claw clippy. This will help prevent a lot of the frizz that comes along with a big downpour. Also, keep a shine serum such as Biosilk in your purse, so you can smooth out frizz quickly once back indoors.

Use galoshes, or other rain proof shoes. Really, nothing can make you look and feel worse than cold, wet toes. If you drive it is easy to bring a change of shoes in the car. If you don’t, carry a canvas bag, with your change of shoes in it, then once you put them on, you can slip the rain boots in. Check out the rain boots below by Chooka. Aren’t they fabulous?! I am completely enamored with the Hound’s Tooth pair!

To further eliminate frizz on a rainy day, carry a large scarf or handkerchief in your bag to tie around your hair when outside. The moisture in the air will have a lot harder time getting your tresses to stand on end.

Wear fabrics that dry quickly. Man made fabrics such as acrylic, nylon, and polyester dry incredibly quickly (especially polyester). Most of you are probably pretty hesitant before pulling out that polyester jumpsuit, so look for blended fabrics, which have any of those three fabrics in it as well.

Carry a mini umbrella that can fold up into a size small enough to fit inside your purse or glove box. I like to carry one of these around in my car when I go almost anywhere. I takes up close to no room, and has saved me numerous times!

On rainy days use only minimal amounts of makeup. As soon as the rain hits your face that foundation will be running down your face. Stick with just the waterproof mascara. If you need more, say for a job interview, bring it with you, arrive early, and freshen up in the lady’s room before going to meet your future boss.

If all else fails…jump in, and splash around! Rainfall can make you feel alive, and is beautiful. Grab your honey, put on your galoshes, and celebrate mother nature!
