Alice in Wonderland Style

January 6, 2008

Alice in Wonderland is one of my all time favorite stories. I have read the book twice, and own two copies! The Disney version is one of my two favorite Disney films (the other being The Jungle Book). I have illustrations from the book as art on my walls. You get the idea….I sort of like Alice in Wonderland.

Back when I was still doing hair I helped style hair for a stage production of Alice in Wonderland. I think it was then that I became truly obsessed with the “Alice in Wonderland Style”. The movie and the book have imprinted such recognizable imagery for each of the characters, as do so many other films and books, that replicating a similar look is quite easy.

I have always been an avid fan of playing dress ups. In my family we had a huge trash bucket full of clothes, and we would throw fashion shows in our living rooms. We had a runway, and would film our walks, and our outfits, and then watch the tapes over and over again. As I got older, I decided I liked the idea of turning dress ups into everyday clothes. I like to wear things that leave people guessing, and more than anything I like to give others ideas. Given the right event, who wouldn’t want to wear an outfit inspired by their favorite character?

Oh Cedar! this one is fabulous! I think the green (the caterpillar!) outfit has my name written all over it. That dress actually looks like it has a bit of an empire waist so I could even get away with it right now while pregnant! :]

MissCedar — if you’re a big Alice fan, you definitely need to check out “The Annotated Alice”, it’s a great version of the book with notes throughout the text that explain the Victorian witticisms and in-jokes peppered througout:

What lovely ideas! I’m a English lit and creative writing student and I’m actually writing a novel that’s a modern re imagination of Alice. I’m going to be imagining all of my characters wearing these outfits now. Thank you so much for sharing!

I StumbledUpon this site! I fell in love with the Alice ensemble right away and gave this site a thumbs up, before I scrolled down to find more treasures! The Mad Hatter/Tea Party outfit has to be my favorite - I would definitely wear that to work. Thanks so much (I’m bookmarking this for later, too). :)
